Striker-midfielder hybrid Zhai leads Houston to 28th D1 title

Houston winning another D1 title is not that unusual. It’s the club’s 28th crown, making the Texan club the most successful in the history of the Americas. But doing so with a midfielder that scored 29 league goals is a historic first in WES.
Wenpeng Zhai has become the highest scoring midfielder for one season in the history of WES. Houston, meanwhile, becomes the first club to win a D1 title without a single striker on the roster.
How did this unusual circumstance come about? Houston recruited two new strikers in off season to replace the recently released club and Hall of Fame legend Abdul Mochtar (he went to Sheffield and scored 8 league goals, incidentally). The two forwards, Schoon and Ceylan, did not hit the ground running. They barely crawled. After several underwhelming performances, both players were shipped out --- one to Glasgow and the other to Genoa.
But Houston now had a problem. No strikers on the roster. And no obvious alternatives in the transfer market. They did have one thing though --- a 5 finish, 5 setup midfielder just coming off a .500 shooting season: Zhai. Valued at 7.5M, Zhai wasn’t generating enough shots from midfield so management took the plunge and placed him into the forward position. The impact was immediate, Zhai scored in every game for the next five, and didn’t stop. He scored 29 goals in less than 24 games.
A lucky season? Perhaps. Certainly, his finishing rate was unusually high at almost 20%. But there is a logical explanation, too.
WES rules dictate a midfielder playing as striker receives a -1 penalty to all skills. However, intense training on finishing specifically would theoretically negate this penalty (since intense training boosts a skill by +1). Therefore, Zhai transforms from a 5/5 midfielder to a 5/4 striker. An added bonus --- Zhai is CRL, so can play all positions across the front line.
The real test is whether the first hybrid mid-striker in WES can maintain his form and continue to score goals in the coming seasons. Fans already have a nickname for the player --- The Zhaibrid.
