Is Tucson going down?

Posted by: Newswire, 2025-01-05, 57 Views

Just a few seasons ago, Tucson won the Americas top division twice — the first top trophies in the club’s long career under manager Dragon Daemon. It’s been a truly golden era for the American club, led by legendary one-club striker Juan Pablo Gil, who kicked off the successful period for the club when he was one as a much-wanted top FA prospect, already valued at 6m.

So it’s perhaps poetic that the ending of Gil’s career is in parallel with the decline of Tucson. Gil, who’s scored more than 200 goals for the club, is currently on 3 goals this season and set for his lowest seasonal total ever. Tucson is four points away from safety and looking set for the drop, with a team of youths and aging vets. Gil is 33yo and looking at retirement.

However, the last time Tucson was relegated, the club used it as a transitional period to rebuild and prospect. Eventually promoting and winning the top division soon after. They will have to do the same, gradually winding down their vets and building a core of the future. How long that takes and what the next generation will look like is anyone’a guess, but winning another striker like Gil in the off season lottery would be a nice start.
